Striping Plywood Laminate Deck

by Gary Metal

1957 Cadillac cold moulded hull with veneer deck.

Factory stripping on deck needs to be redone post sanding.

There are no seams or caulk since this is laminate.

How do I reapply the strips prior to varnish?

Laminating

I'd recommend epoxy to coat the veneer and as the glue.

Epoxy doesn’t need the same clamping pressure as other glues.

Cut and 'cold' fit the laminates ad trim for size and shape.

When you're happy with their fit, sand them and coat the laminates with three coats of clear epoxy, sanding between each coat.

Before you start gluing the laminates in place, assemble some 'weights' to hold the strips down and some plastic/polythene sheeting to prevent the weights from becoming glued.

Stacks of those old boating magazines are ideal 'weights' or small sandbags.

Use a slow setting epoxy to allow plenty of time to get the veneer in place.

Try not to use so much epoxy that it runs out the edges when compressed.

Use tape to hold the strips in position, then cover with the plastic/polythene then distribute the 'weights' as evenly as possible especially on the edges.

Once cured the epoxy will have to be protected from UV with a good quality varnish with UV filters.
