Drain Plug
by: Al

A drain plug is indeed useful for removing water that may collect within a wooden boat. Here are three popular ways to install one:

1) Transom Drain Plugs: These are the most common type of drain plugs for wooden boats. They're installed into the transom (the flat surface at the stern of the boat). You would simply drill a hole of the appropriate size, place in the drain plug, and then either thread it or seal it in place with marine-grade sealant. You can use either brass or plastic plugs.

2) Garboard Drain Plug: This is a type of plug that is installed in the bottom of the boat near the stern. These are usually bronze and have a nut on the inside that allows you to remove the plug while indoors for any drainage and close it before launch.

3) Self-Bailing Plugs: Some higher-end boats come with self-bailing plugs installed. These plugs automatically drain water when the boat is moving and prevent water from coming back in.

Remember though, whenever you drill into your wooden boat, ensure that proper sealing and finishing procedures are followed to prevent water from infiltrating the wood around the hole, which could cause rot.

Always consult with experts or professionals if unsure about the process, as improper installation can run the risk of causing severe damage to your boat.
